William Gladstone resigns as leader of the Liberal Party in the
House of Commons, after losing the general election to Benjamin
Disraeli's Conservative Party. Spencer Cavendish now becomes
leader, although Gladstone is to resume the role five years later
and serve as Prime Minister three more times.
