The second phase of the Hundred Years' War had been primarily successful for France, under the leadership of King Charles V. After he was succeeded by his son, Charles VI, who was less capable as a commander, they began to lose the advantage, so Charles signed a truce with Richard II of England. Although initially planned to be of short duration, it was renewed repeatedly, ultimately lasting until 1415.
