This long-awaited General Council of the Church was a meeting of church officials (including cardinals, papal legates, archbishops and bishops) at Trent (Trento) in the South Tyrol (now in northern Italy) and was to be the focal-point of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. It codified Catholic doctrine in response to the Protestant challenge, and enacted numerous reforms of administration and discipline.
