The Catholic countries of Spain and Portugal, unsurprisingly, supported the Royalist cause in the British civil wars, and in the aftermath of Charles I's execution, had been offering assistance to Prince Rupert in his attacks on the Commonwealth. After Rupert was finally chased out of Spain by Admiral Robert Blake in autumn 1650, however, Spain was finally forced to recognise the Commonwealth as at least the de facto government of England.
