Nicolae Paulescu, a professor of physiology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest was the first one to isolate insulin, which he called at that time pancrein. It was patented in Romania but not used clinically. Frederick Banting and Charles Best at Toronto General Hospital also succeeded in isolating the hormone insulin, producing what they called isletin, and tested this extract on dogs. It was then successfully tested on humans. In 1923 the Novel Prize Committee awarded the Nobel Prize to two men: Frederick Banting and J. J. R. Macleod.
