In 1974 Dr Raymond Damadian (born 16th March, 1936) filed a patent for the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect cancerous tissue. This led Damadian to make the first whole-body magnetic resonance scan using a prototype device in 1977. Chemist Paul Lauterbur and British physicist Peter Mansfield received the 2003 Nobel Prize for the development of MRI.
