The Civil War in Nicaragua can be traced as far back as 1974, when a Sandinista faction kidnapped business and political elites sympathetic and supportive of the Somoza regime. However, in 1979 the Sandinistas, with material and rhetorical support from Communists around the world, staged its coup de grace. In June 1979, the Somoza government crumbled and capitulated and city after city fell to Saninista forces. The 17 June saw the country's president, Somoza, resign and flee from Managua. In 1979-1980, the new Sandinista government appropriated the property of former Nicaraguan President Anastasio Somoza Debayle. The new Marxist-oriented government nationalized a number of industries and Somoza himself was assassinated on 17 September 1980. The United States, for its part, was displeased…
