In the aftermath of the Crimean War, Austria, Prussia, France, Britain, Russia, Turkey and Sardinia conclude that it would be appropriate to unite the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. In January 1859 the representatives of both principalities elect the same ruler, Alexandru Ioan Cuza. From 1861 onwards, this new country is known as Romania.
