By preliminary treaty of San Stefano between Russia and Turkey, Montenegro to be enlarged, with port of Antivari; Romania, Montenegro and Serbia to be independent; reforms to be undertaken in Bosnia and Herzegovina; Bulgaria to be enlarged with a seaboard on Aegean and most of Macedonia; Russia to receive Ardaham, Kars and Batum, while Turkey to pay Russia a huge indemnity. This was adjusted in the Congress of Berlin, when Bulgaria was made an autonomous principality within the Ottoman Empire.
