After the schism of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church headed by the Pope, English reformers took upon themselves the task of reforming the new Anglican Church by purging it from all Catholic vestiges. Soon, however, some believers were persuaded that the Reformation was not being carried out thoroughly and demanded more extensive reforms. Elizabeth I’s own reluctance to impose changes in the Church of England, and then her successor James I’s intense dislike for these religious enthusiasts and reformers all added to an escalating feeling of religious dissent.
