Today regarded as the beginning of the
Reconquista
, the battle marked the first victory of a Christian army
against the Muslim Moors, after their conquest of the Iberian
territory in 711. The battle assured the independence of the
Kingdom of Asturias in the North of the Iberian peninsula, which
became a Christian stronghold against further Muslim expansion.
