The Bulgarian King Simeon invades Thrace and becomes the ruler of the whole Balkan Peninsula, driving the Byzantine Empire out. This latter is forced to recognize officially the imperial title of the Bulgarian monarchs. The battle of Anchilaus was one of the largest battles in the Middle Ages and one of the greatest military successes of Bulgaria.
