It was founded by Radu Negru (“Ralph the Black”), voivode of a
region in southern Transylvania (then part of Hungary), who crossed
the Transylvanian Alps and settled at Câmpulung. The new
principality was initially dominated by Hungary, but obtained its
independence in 1330.
