, 2005) by the eastern German author Ingo Schulze (b. 1962) is a satirical epistolary novel consisting of 657 pages of autobiographical letters, all written by a fictional male protagonist, with 130 pages of short stories and a novella by the same man appended. The letters are addressed in rotation to the protagonist’s older sister, his best friend from school, and a western German photographer, with whom he fell in love after working with her on a newspaper he founded after the 1989 revolution. The author Schulze introduces the novel with his fictional alter ego, a literary persona and editor of the letters also named Ingo Schulze, who deconstructs the protagonist in a Preface and 376 editorial footnotes by pointing out inconsistencies, falsehoods, and missing…
