, is proof of the author’s ability to deal emphatically with the challenging concept of transcendent being. Lenz’ artistry in creating a complex narrative on different time levels is demonstrated again in this text. Hans, the first-person narrator, moves forward and backwards in time, revealing how Arne joined his family and how he is remembered. Sometimes Hans even addresses Arne directly by using the second person singular, a device Lenz uses to perfection in his story
