L’homme invisible/The Invisible Man

was written by Franco-Ontarian poet Patrice Desbiens. It was published in 1981 by Prise de Parole and Penumbra Press, two publishing houses from Northern Ontario. Although the story is narrated in the third person, it is partially autobiographical. Like Desbiens, his main character, the invisible man, is a student at Timmins’ Saint-Alphonse School and Sacred Heart College; like Desbiens’ mother, the invisible man’s mother dies before he reaches adulthood; both the author and his protagonist leave their Northern Ontario hometown of Timmins for the bright lights of Toronto even though they do not stay there very long; both live for a while in the Quebecois countryside before moving to Quebec City and taking up a job at a local record store.
