occupies a unique place in Belarusian literary history as a manifesto of Belarusian national identity. The play was first published in the literary journal

Polymia

(2, 3) in 1924 and was staged in the Belarusian State Theater in 1926, where it received only one performance before being removed from the theater’s repertoire on account of its ostensibly “petty bourgeois nationalism”(Gnilamëdaŭ, 169) and "counter-revolutionary elements" (Moskwin, 53).
