Infinite Ground

(2016) is the debut novel of Martin MacInnes, a Scottish novelist who was born in Inverness and now resides in Edinburgh. It won the 2017 Somerset Maugham Award. MacInnes’ debut novel is “a cerebral exposition of the human body and modern alienation set in South America, ostensibly far removed from the author’s roots in Scotland” (Colebrook 2017: np). As Michael Barron indicates, “[t]he Scottish writer’s award-winning debut spins the premise of a classic noir into the realm of the supernatural” (Barron 2017: np).

The narrative structures of a missing person and an unsolved crime suggest the novel is traversing the territory usually recognisable from the genre of Scottish crime fiction and the police procedural – “a tried and tested template for crime
