(2013, English translation 2018), was the first work by an Iraqi writer to win the prestigious International Prize for Arab Fiction in 2014 – where the prize also covers the costs of an English translation of the novel. Expertly translated by Jonathan Wright,

was published in 2018 and the novel was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in the same year. The novel also won Le Grand Prix de L’Imaginaire in 2017.
