Syed Waliullah, The Ugly Asian

The Ugly Asian, Syed Waliullah’s only novel in English, was posthumously published in 2013 by the Bangla Academy. Waliulllah, who had started his career in the English-language Statesman in Calcutta, was equally skilled in both Bengali and English. While his major contribution to Bengali literature is Lalsalu [Tree Without Roots] (1948), he was writing short stories in both English and Bengali. Thus both “No Enemy” and “The Escape” were published early in his career. However, Waliullah thought himself primarily to be a Bengali writer.

Apart from The Ugly Asian, he also wrote an unfinished piece of fiction “How to Cook Beans” – although its Bengali translation has been published. For some reason, Waliullah did not want to associate his own name with these writings in
