Helgakviða Hjörvarðssonar

[The Poem of Helgi Hiorvardsson] is an Old Norse-Icelandic heroic poem, composed in the eddic metre

fornyrðislag

[old story metre] with the exception of a section of 19 stanzas in

ljóðaháttr

[song metre], from stanza 13 through stanza 31, which encompasses a senna [flyting] between Atli and Hrímgerðr, known as Hrímgerðarmál [Hrímgerðr’s sayings]. The poetry of

Helgavkiða Hjörvarðssonar

is divided into 44 stanzas, almost all in the form of direct speech, but there are a number of prose insertions. The oldest version of

Helgavkiða Hjörvarðssonar

survives in a vellum manuscript from c. 1270,

Konungsbók eddukvæða

(Codex Regius of Eddic Poetry; GKS 2365 4to). There are no other sources that share content with the poem.
