Split Code(originally published as
Dolly and the Nanny Bird) the heroine and narrator Joanna Emerson has almost as dual a role as Johnson Johnson himself: she is not only a trained nanny, but the deviser of an unbreakable code. She is also the daughter of Professor Sir Bernard Emerson who, Joanna learns during the course of the story, is head of the government department in charge of British secret agents. Her previous employer Mike Widess was one of these, and she was helping him by coding; after his death in a car crash which was almost certainly not accidental, she is instructed by the department to accept an offer of employment in the US in the hope of discovering Widess’s killers.
