The Unvanquished was Faulkner’s tenth novel, the seventh set in Yoknapatawpha County, published on 15 February 1938. Six of the seven chapters had previously been published as short stories: “Ambuscade” on 29 September 1934 in The Saturday Evening Post, “Retreat” on 13 October 1934 in the Post, “Raid” on 3 November 1934 in the Post, “The Unvanquished” (retitled “Riposte in Tertio” in the novel) on 14 November 1936 in the Post, “Vendée” on 5 December 1936 in the Post, and “Skirmish at Sartoris” (originally titled “Drusilla”) in Scribner’s in April 1935. The final chapter, “An Odor of Verbena”, written for the novel, Faulkner tried but failed to publish as a short story.
