John Moore was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1729 (baptized 7 December), the second child and eldest son of Charles Moore, a clergyman, and his wife Marion Anderson, the daughter of a wealthy Glasgow merchant. Following the death of Charles Moore in 1737, his widow took her seven children back to Glasgow, where John Moore spent the rest of his childhood. After leaving school, he began his studies at the University of Glasgow but then apprenticed himself to John Gordon, a surgeon who had previously trained Moore’s friend and distant cousin, Tobias Smollett.
