Charles Edward Stuart ('the Young Pretender'), grandson of James II of England and Scotland, lands on Eriskay Island, Scotland, and two days later crosses to the mainland on the Moidart Peninsula. English troops are recalled from the Netherlands in preparation for the challenge he will pose.
