Almudena Grandes (1960-2021) was one of the most influential and widely read Spanish novelists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Her work is characterised by a deep commitment to historical memory, a realist aesthetic rooted in the Spanish narrative tradition, and a sustained engagement with questions of gender, class, and political identity. Her fiction has been translated into more than twenty languages, and a number of her works have been adapted into films. A prominent public intellectual as well as an acclaimed writer, Grandes was an important voice in Spanish literary and cultural discourse until the time of her premature death in 2021.
