A prolific writer and disciplined researcher, Margaret Gabrielle Vere Campbell Long was responsible for numerous popular works in a variety of genres. During the first half of the 20th century her short fiction appeared under several pseudonyms in major British and American magazines, including Pearson's, The London Magazine, Collier's, Harper's, and The Woman's Home Companion. In addition, she published novels (historical, romance, supernatural), biographies and other nonfiction, plays, an autobiography, and children's literature. She was best known as Marjorie Bowen, but also wrote under the names of Joseph Shearing, George R. Preedy, Robert Paye, and John Winch. Unconfirmed speculation suggests she might also have written under the names E. M. Winch and Bertha Winch.
