Ann-Marie MacDonald is one of Canada's most high-profile personalities, an award-winning actor, playwright, and novelist. “I have never wanted to be only an actor or only a writer,” she has said. “The two have always been dual aspirations”.

A self-described “Air Force brat”, MacDonald was born in 1959 on a German Air Force base, the child of a Scottish father, who served as an Air Force accountant, and a Lebanese mother. She grew up on a series of Canadian bases before settling in Ottawa, Ontario. Summers were spent in Cape Breton, where both of her parents were born. After completing high school in Ottawa, she spent a year at Carleton University and then entered the National Theatre School in Montreal, Quebec.
