The SDF was established by H. M. Hyndman as Britain's first organised socialist political party. It had its first meeting on June 7, 1881. Prominent members of the SDF were William Morris, George Lansbury and Eleanor Marx; many other of its early leading members had previously been active in the Manhood Suffrage League.
