Sir Thomas More resigned as Lord Chancellor, in the face of deep
disagreements between him and the King about the current religious
situation. More refused to sanction Henry VIII's assertion of his
supremacy over the Pope, or his attempt to obtain a divorce from
his longstanding wife, Catherine of Aragon.
