Sir Thomas More refuses to take the oath pledging loyalty to the new succession, partly because of his sympathy for the exiled Catherine of Aragon, whom this scheme of succession totally ignores, and partly because of his attachment to elements of the old religion, which condemns such an overriding of papal authority.
