The Treaty of Joinville is signed by the Catholic League of France, under Henry Duke of Guise, and Philip II of Spain. By its terms, Philip agrees to grant Spanish financial support to the League, to aid the claim to the French throne of Henry, Cardinal of Bourbon. They are attempting to prevent the Cardinal's nephew, the Huguenot Henry of Navarre, from gaining the throne. In return for this support, the Catholic League promises Philip II the territories of Navarre and Béarn, on the Spanish border.
