Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira (1542–1595) was a Spanish navigator best known for the voyages of discovery he led into the Pacific in 1567 and 1595 in search of Terra Australis. He sailed witth two ships from Peru and reached the Solomon Islands in February 1568. His party then explored the surrounding islands of Malaita, Guadalcanal, Makira and Choiseul Island.
