On the 15th of May, 1972 Democratic presidential candidate George Wallace (25th August, 1919 - 13th September, 1998) was shot 4 times by Arthur Bremer while campaigning in Laurel, Maryland. One of the bullets lodged in Wallace's spine and he was left permanently paralyzed.
