The debate was a response to The Times' publication of Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice's letter. The Major-General had been removed as Director for Military Operations; his letter claimed that the coalition government of Lloyd George had given Parliament false information about the strength of the troops for the Western Front. The debate threatened D. Lloyd George's leadership, and though he dealt well with the situation - and the House of Commons supported the government by 295 votes to 108 - the debate further embittered relations between Lloyd George and Asquith, and increased disunity in the Liberal Party.
