Florence takes Pisa, ending the latter's embattled political
independence for ever. A dominant maritime state in the early
medieval period, its power had been declining since the thirteenth
century, and had spent most of the fifteenth century under the
control of Florence, although it had reasserted its independence in
1496 during the French invasion.
