Princess Claude of France, daughter of Louis XII, marries her
cousin Francis, Duke of Angouleme. She had previously been
betrothed to Charles, heir to Spain and Burgundy, but the French
Estates deemed this too politically dangerous a match, since it
would involve the loss of Brittany and a France surrounded on all
sides by Hapsburg power.
