Mary Tudor, widow of Louis XII of France, makes a secret marriage to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. Henry VIII had deputed Brandon with bringing her back safely from France on the condition that he would not propose to her, but he was evidently unable to resist. However, the couple were eventually pardoned by Henry VIII, and instead of charging them with treason, Henry merely demanded a huge fine, consisted of Mary's dowry from Louis XII and £24,000 to be paid by instalments. They underwent a public marriage ceremony at Greenwich Palace on 13th May.
