Lord Thomas Fitzgerald, known as Silken Thomas due to the rich clothing worn by him and his retinue, was made Lord Deputy of Ireland when his father was summoned to London. Young and inexperienced, he was susceptible to influence, and when he heard rumours that his father had been executed in England, he rose in rebellion against Henry VIII. On 28th July he assassinated Archbishop Allen of Dublin, the Chancellor of Ireland.
