After the last Duke of the Milanese house of Sforza, Francesco Sforza II, dies, the duchy is occupied by Charles V. He subsequently offers the lands to Charles, Duke of Angouleme, the third son of Francis I, in an agreement by whose terms the Duke would also marry Christina of Denmark. These grants would rely on France agreeing to support the Emperor's demands for a general council of the Church, recognising his brother Ferdinand as King of the Romans and ending their alliance with the Turks. However, Angouleme was not prepared to assent to these proposals, and the marriage never took place.
