Reginald Pole, who had been appointed Cardinal the previous
year, is now made a legate by Pope Paul III, charged with bringing
about Henry VIII's return to the Church of Rome. He sets off on a
mission to England, but fails to even enter the country, and
eventually returns to Rome in August.
