The German Catholic princes establish a defensive League of
Nuremberg, in response to the largely Protestant Schmalkaldic
League. The predominant signatories are the Emperor Charles V,
Ferdinand of Austria, Duke George of Saxony, the Elector of Bavaria
and the Archbishops of Mainz and Salzburg.
