Giovanni Maria del Monte was elected Pope Julius III after a long conclave which had been divided between imperialist, French and Farnesean factions. Ultimately, none of these parties was able to hold sway, so del Monte, cardinal-bishop of Palestrina, was elected as a compromise candidate. Once he took office, however, the efficiency for which he was known was replaced by a life of personal luxury, and his five-year papacy achieved little.
