John Frederick, the Ernestine Elector of Saxony, dies. Having fought against Charles V in the Schmalkaldic War, he was taken prisoner by the Emperor and kept in captivity for five years, but spent his last two years triumphantly restored to his position, undertaking reforms and planning a new University of Jena in place of Wittenberg.
