Mary of Guise, mother of the young queen Mary, succeeds the Earl of Arran as Regent of Scotland, holding the role until her death in 1560. Under her government, French interests dominated at court: she often asked her French royal brothers for advice, and government posts including that of Treasurer and Keeper of the Great Seal were held by Frenchmen.
