Charles V leaves the Low Countries and journeys to Spain, where he retires to the monastery of Yuste. For over thirty-five years he had ruled over large swathes of western Europe, in charge of Spain, the Netherlands, the Holy Roman Empire and parts of Italy, as well as the Spanish Empire in America. Eventually he could no longer cope with these enormous responsibilities, and crippled by gout, he took the decision to abdicate.
