Before the reigns of Ferdinand and Isabella, the capital of Castile had been Toledo, and Barcelona the capital of Aragon, but after the two kingdoms were unified by these monarchs, a single capital became necessary. Charles I had favoured Seville as his base, but now Philip II moved his court to Madrid and made it the de facto capital.
