Historical Context Note

Mary Queen of Scots' husband, the Earl of Bothwell, is defeated by Lords of the Covenant at the battle of Carberry Hill. While Bothwell escapes to Norway, Mary herself is taken captive and imprisoned in Lochleven Castle.
