Philip II of Spain's son Don Carlos dies. He had been constrained in solitary confinement for the past six months after he had apparently plotted to murder his father and attempted to flee to the Netherlands. After suffering serious head injuries in 1562, and undergoing skull trepanning, his behaviour had been unpredictable, and he may have developed an eating disorder while in confinement.
