On the death of Sigismund II, the last of the Jagellon dynasty
which had ruled Poland since 1386, the Polish Estates declare the
monarchy to be elective. They elect Henri de Valois as King in May
1573, but he rules for less than a year before leaving Poland to
take the French throne after the death of his elder brother Charles
IX.
